STATISTICS KI PHILOSOPHY !!!
Statistics is an integral part of public health. It is difficult to assess a problem in community without counting that problem where statistics helps us. It helps us to quantify any problem, assess the intensity of that problem, prioritize different problems and then plan different solutions to these problems. Statistics also helps in assessing the effectiveness of that solution. Does it really help ?
I was feeling really low yesterday and I saw a book on my bookshelf (Thank God for books ) - The mind of Mahatma Gandhi. I felt it would help me understand my suffering. So I took the book and opened the first page. Policy of truth it said......and last line of that para was 'Truth is God' instead of the maxim 'God is Truth'. It helps him see God face to face.
Be Honest ...........Be Honest ..............Be Honest!!!!!
Learning since childhood and now I learn that through statistics. HOW?
Statistics is numbers. The number is supposed to be what you observe. The basic principle of statistics is honesty. It is so beautiful that way. Any problem any work done any outcome of any intervention can be coverted into a number. The number tells us a beautiful story. How life happens..........How many people were born? How many people died? How many suffered? Statistics is the voice of millions who want to be heard.
Do we really hear these voices ? Of what the people really want ?
NO!! Data is often tampered with. I think tampering is more of an effort than just stating the actual numbers. But people work really hard to show everything in their favour. Many of the studies are fake. Many interventions dont work but they are shown through work. Just use a different statistical test or equation.
What do researchers want ?
- Publications in reputed journals ( Oh so obvious! )
- Money from associated pharma or food product companies ?? ( No doctors dont ever work for money!!! Never !!)
- Fame and have a legacy ! ( Everyone wants to be glamourous )
- Fame to become popular among patients (All patients should be treated by them and only them)
So whom to look up to? Published articles need to be critically analysed and then their inferences should be put to practice.
We know now cholesterol is not associated with heart disease. Untill this research everyone was blaming cholesterol and doing everything to make people reduce it. And now? Have a look at the above research paper!!
That was all what I felt about statistics (philosophically) since I am going to use statistics in the future!
Lets see if I become rich or legend ........Time will tell.
P.S : I am too lazy to become either!
