Books ,trains and the Bombay rains!!
Being a Community Medicine doctor I have to travel everyday by train to reach my destination at Govandi urban health centre. To while away the time I have started the habit of reading a book everyday.Currently reading 1984 by George Orwell. It is so hard to digest whatever is written in this book.So to pacify myself I messaged Sunil kaka- I cannot believe that the book 1984 is turning into reality right now and Sunil kaka be like -Smell your coffee my dear!!
That was all about books and trains but the main concern for public health people is the monsoon rains.Believe me R.J Malishka is not the only one breeding mosquitoes in her garden!
Every year its the same story.....As soon as June July months arrive the season of dengue and malaria starts. All mosquito borne and water borne diseases start rising.Dengue ,malaria ,leptospirosis, typhoid, rota virus infections and various types of diarrhoea. When there is heavy rainfall it washes out all the breeding sites but when there is intermittent rainfall it gives rise to various puddles and breeding sites for mosquitoes.
Dengue is transmited by Aedes mosquito and malaria parasite by female Anopheles mosquito.Aedes mosquito are known to feed on us humans in the mornings while the Anopheles do that at night. So Odomos to be used in the morning and at night Good night.Keep yourself protected for the whole day.I was telling a patient one day about how to prevent breeding of mosquitoes and what they should to clear the water logged areas in their vicinity. He had other problems only as he was living on rent in that chawl and he did not have a say in anything. So I had to tell him other measures like using a mosquito net .Now a days there are medicated nets also available.Clinically you diagnose malaria if you have periodic fever with chills followed by excessive sweating. After this you should immediately do a blood test for malaria then the doctor will do the rest. But first prevent it!In dengue you get fever with bodyache and other general symptoms. It canbe confirmed by the dengue NS1 test.Dengue needs continuous blood count monitoring since the platelet levels drop and may have to be replaced.
Then there is leptospirosis....transmitted by rat urine. And rat urine can be mixed in the collected rain water on the road.So if you have a wound on your feet then you have to be extra carefull. With the water-borne diseases like typhoid and other diarrhoeas you have to be carefull with your drinking water. And yes make sure your pani puri vala gives you puris filled with bisleri water.Boil your drinking water.Best way to get rid of them germs.
Monsoon is a very romantic season. So enjoy your bhajiya but also prevent your loved ones from getting these dangerous diseases.Mumbai tuza pavsa var bharosa naay kaay!
Blagodaria!!(A bulgarian thank you )

Indeed the coffee is rather bitter. Newspeak is like the famous story of a frog in a water that is slowly being heated versus the frog being dropped in a boiling water. Read Salili Shetty's (Secretary General of Amnesty International) interview in The Hindu on Saturday 22 July. Serious warning bells, which anyway have been ringing for a long time. But like the frog, no one is "feeling the heat"
ReplyDeleteDengue, leptospira and then there is camp every sunday...
