Being a community medicine doctor!
Random aunty in society asking,"So what are you doing these days?"
"I am doing M.D in Nair hospital."I say proudly hoping to avoid further questions.
"Oh great! What specialization?" The inevitable question comes for which I know I would have to spend sufficient time and energy answering it.
P.S.M .....Who does that?It is nobody's first choice.Random aunties don't even know about it and they think that I am pursuing some new found branch.....which makes me look good in front of her ...but seriously P.S.M people are thought of as those who build latrines for poor people and who take advantage of so many bank holidays.
Oh Ok sorry its not P.S.M anymore. Its Community Medicine....Gives it a clinical feel.Makes us feel more like doctors rather than social workers. But does it really mater what we call ourselves.Think.What we do as preventive doctors is just secondary. The name matters.Fancy!.
Ok so I am Dr Rucha doing M.D. Community Medicine in T.N.M.C.I got this post-graduate seat by luck I would say.Obviously it wasnt my field of choice.I wanted to do paediatrics. So after 2 years of rigourous studying and 1 year of giving up on doing P.G. I gave the entrance exam just for the sake of it and landed in this department in Nair hospital. So I was actually happy with it.Slowly understanding the concept of community medicine I started loving this.It wasnt love at first sight but was insidious in onset and gradual in progression I wold say.
Creating awareness an important job of a community medicine doctor which makes me write this blog. This year's WHO theme is Depression : Let's talk. This is a topic very close to me as I have gone through the whole melodrama myself.Luckily Dr Milan had kept a essay writing competition on it.I wrote the essay with such ease and understanding I surprised myself.I was awarded the 3rd prize for it.I got such amazing response from so many people which made me realize that I should keep on writing.
So here I start.first day today...yaaay!
Starting with depression and mental health illnesses I will keep posting about various public health problems.
Done for today...1 tick on my checklist!!

ReplyDeleteVery good. Proud of you.
ReplyDeleteHappy for you .
Well Written Rucha. Community Medicine, by any name, is extremely crucial, for two reasons. It works on Prevention - as per its earlier name (which is always better than cure) and is (at least supposed to) look after Community needs - as per its new Avatar. With no respect to anyone, all other branches seem to be more interested in expanding their "drainage" area, because it is a matter of survival for them.
ReplyDeleteKeep writing. You have a flair for it.
